1850 United States Census - District 7 - White County, TN

James Crawley was listed just below Allen Dunn in the 1840 White County, TN census. He was 40-50-years-old. He was also listed in the 1830 White County, TN census but was 20-30 years old, which likely means he was around 40 in 1840 and 30 in 1830 and was born around 1800. In 1850, a James T. Crawley is in the 7th district of White County, TN. He was born in 1798 in Maryland and was a potter, which was probably why he was living near Allen Dunn in 1840. Both were potters. Crawley's wife, Anna, was from North Carolina, but the listed children were all born in Tennessee.

One name above Allen Dunn was Nancy Tilley, who was 50-60-years-old. There is a Sarah Tilley in the 1830 White County, TN census who was 50-60 and had similar neighbors as Nancy Tilley in 1840. This could be the same person.

Two names below Allen Dunn was William Martin, listed as 60-70 years old. He was listed as 77 and as having been born in SC in 1850, and his wife was born in NC, while the others in the household were born in TN. His occupation was miller. He was also in White County in 1830, listed as 50-60-years-old. Some list his daughter as Anna, the wife of the previously mentioned James Crawley, but I have not seen any evidence yet.

Two names above Allen Dunn was Eliza Boyd, who was 20-30-years-old. She was possibly in White County, TN in 1850 in the household of Elizabeth Boyd.

Three names below Allen Dunn was Lewis Long, who was 20-30-years-old. There is no further information on Lewis, except that there was a child of 7-years-old, Lewis Long, in the household of Thomas Clouse in 1850. It is possible that the older Lewis was his father. There was also a George Long, born 1840.

Three names above Allen Dunn was Corder Lollar, who was 20-30-years-old. He was in White County, TN in 1840, listed as 30-years-old and born in TN. He was living next To John Lollar, who was likely his father, who was 60-70 in 1840 and 50-60 in 1830, still in White County, TN. In 1850, John is in District 7 of White County and is 72, born in NC.

Four names below Allen Dunn was Adam Massa, who was 40-50-years-old. He was in White County, TN in 1830 as 20-30-years-old and in 1820 as 26-45-years-old.

John Lollar has already been mentioned as 4 names above Allen, so 5 names below was John Stewart, 30-40-years-old. In 1830, he was 20-30-years-old and listed as John Stewart Jr. That year, the name after him was James Dunn, who was 20-30-years-old. In 1850, he was listed in White County, TN, as having been born in 1810 in VA.

Five names above Allen Dunn was Levi Perkins who was 50-60-years-old. He was listed as 62-years-old in 1850 and born in NC, with his wife born in VA. In 1830, he was in White County at 40-50, and in 1820, he was there at 26-44-years-old. In 1860, he was in Putnam County, TN at 73 and born in NC, and in 1870, he was in Putnam County at 82 and born in NC.

Six names below Allen Dunn was Hiram brown who was 40-50-years-old. With White and Jackson Counties sharing a border in 1830, this Hiram Brown is likely the one on the Jackson County, TN census that year at 50-60 years old. A 60-year-old Hyrum Brown was in the 10th district of White County in 1850, listed as born in SC.

Six names above Allen Dunn was George Weltz who was 60-70-years-old. This person is difficult to locate but may be George Welch in the 1820 and 1830 White County, TN census records.

Seven names below Allen Dunn was Elijah LMoore, who was 60-70-years-old. He was in White County, TN in 1830 at 50-60-years-old, and was beside William Raney, a possible step-uncle of Allen Dunn. He was also here in 1820 at 45+ and beside Rachel Speers, with whom he had Hiram Spears. Rachel was Hiram's mother and the DNA of Hiram's descendants, as far as the paternal line, is from the Elmore family, so it is assumed that Elijah was Hiram's father, though it might have been one of Elijah's sons. The mortality schedule for the 1850 census says that Elijah died of gravel in 1849 after a 15-day sickness, that he was widowed, and that he was born in NC and was 90-years-old. In 1810 in Wayne County, KY, the place where the Lafever family lived before coming to TN, there is an Elisha Elmore who is thought to be Elijah's brother. Elisha later moved to Cumberland County, TN, and had a son named John Allen Elmore. With the Elmore, Dunn, and Lafever families living near each other, it seems possible that, with both families having a John Allen Dunn/John Allen Elmore, that there must be some connection. Elijah was likely on the 1800 Wilkes County, NC census as 26-44-years-old. Early tax records show Elijah in White County by 1825 at least, living in the same area and listed with Thomas and George Elmore.

Seven names above Allen Dunn was George Early, who was 50-60-years-old. He was also in White County in 1830, at 40-50.

Eight names below Allen Dunn was Andrew Lefever, who was 60-70-years-old. He was also in White County in 1830 at 50-60. In 1820, he was in Wayne Couny, KY, at 45+. Catherine and David Lefevers were living near him in 1820. Andrew is thought to be the father of Catherine Lafever who is thought to be Allen Dunn's wife, but I have seen no documentation of this. An older man, Delbert Dunn, told me that she was a Lafever. She would've been his great-great-grandmother. Andrew was in Wayne County in 1810 at 26-45-years-old and near David and Jacob Lafever.

Eight names above Allen Dunn was James Lefever, who was 20-30-years-old. In 1830, he was probably in the household of Andrew Lafever at 10-15-years-old because Andrew is thought to be his father. In 1850, he was in District 7 of White County, TN at 35-years-old and listed as a potter, having been born in KY.

Nine names below Allen Dunn was James Passon, who was 30-40-years-old.

Nine names above Allen Dunn was Thomas C. Martin, who was 20-30-years-old. In 1830, he was listed as 20-30 and near Stephen Martin, who would have been 30-40. In 1850, he was in White County, TN, at 38-years-old, and born in TN. Based on the 1825 White County tax list, he might be the son of Thomas Martin Sr. and the Elizabeth Martin next to him in 1840 could be his mother.

Ten names below Allen Dunn was Andrew Lefever, who was 20-30-years-old. He was in the 1850 White County census at 36-years-old and listed as a potter born in KY. Andrew Lafever is thought to be his father, and he is likely the 15-20-year-old in his household in 1830.

Ten names above Allen Dunn was Elizabeth Martin, who was 40-50-years-old.

Eleven names below Allen Dunn was Green Martin, who was 30-40-years-old. In the 1850 White County census, he was in the 7th district and 50-years-old, having been born in VA. His wife, Rhoda, was born in NC, and there was a 95-year-old Susan Martin living with him. She was born in VA and likely his mother.

Eleven names above Allen Dunn was Caffrey Martin, who was 70-80-years old. He was in the 5th district of Van Buren County, TN, in 1850, at 87, in the household of Thomas Martin. Adam Susan Martin, age 90, is listed with him, and this is likely the same Susan Martin listed with Green Martin in White County in 1850. It is likely the census has been taken at different times and Caffrey may have passed away in between, Susan moving in with her son. Thomas and his wife, as well as Caffrey and Susan, were lised as having been born in VA. Peter Dunn, Allen's brother as shown by DNA, was also in the 5th district of Van Buren County that year. He was 38-years-old and listed as born in KY. Caffrey was in White County in 1830 at 60-69-years-old and near James and Stephen Raney. James Raney is thought to be Allen's step-father, and the father of Stephen Raney who married Delila Dunn, thought to be Allen's sister, in Pulaski County, KY. Caffrey was also in White County in 1820 at 45+. In 1810, he is likely the Caffrey Martin in Montgomery County, VA, listed as 26-45. He is in the 1825 White County tax list, along with Green, Caffrey Jr., Thomas Jr., William, John, Stephen, and Thomas Sr. Caffrey received a land grant in White County, TN, for 12 acres on 26 March 1819. The land was on the Falling Water River and bordered by Stephen Martin. Caffrey was in a Tennessee Supreme court case in 1838 against Lanson Clark. On 31 May 1825, Caffrey bought or was granted 82 acres on the Falling Water River in White County and bordered by John Martin.

Twelve names below Allen Dunn was Jane Conway, who was 40-50-years-old. She may have been the Jane Conway in Jackson County in 1830 at 30-40-years-old. She is also likely the Jane Conaway in White County, district 10, in 1850, at 50, born in AL, and living with Amanda Conaway, 23, and Nancy Manfield. In 1860, she was possibly in Putnam County, District 1, at 80 and claiming to be born in NC and with Nancy who was 14. In 1820, there was a Thomas Conway, near others who would have been near Nancy in 1840, so it is possible that this would be her husband.

Twelve names above Allen Dunn was Samuel Dunnagin, who was 40-50-years-old. He was in White County in 1830 at 20-29 and on the 1825 White County tax list. In 1850, he was possibly the Samuel Dunigan in Wayne County, MO, listed as 44 and born in VA, with wife Sarah born in NC and all the children from Abasalom to George born in TN. The three youngest children, beginning at Jane, 5, were born in MO.

Thirteen names below Allen Dunn was Nancy Elmore, who was 40-50-years-old.

Thirteen names above Allen Dunn was Delila Raney, who was 20-30-years-old. She was the widow of Stephen Raney, who she married in Pulaski County, KY. She was likely Allen Dunn's sister. She would have been with Stephen Raney in the 1830 White County census. She would have been with her mother, Mary Dunn in 1820 in Adair County, KY, and Stephen would have been in Pulaski County, KY with his dad, James. There was an Allen Raney, 20, living with George and Elizabeth Welch in White County, District 7, in 1850. George, 71, was from NC and Elizabeth, 64, from VA. There was also a William Raney, 21 and a potter, in 7th District of White County, TN in 1850. He was married to Malinda and had 5 kids. Allen Raney and one of William's children were listed as idiotic. It is possible that these other Raineys are children of Delila or at least related to her husband. Allen's brother, Peter, had a daughter named Delilah. Also, Mary, who married Hezekiah Dunn and then James Raney, was a Wilson. Allen had a son, James Wilson Dunn.

Fourteen names below Allen Dunn was Richard Judson, who was 60-70-years-old. He was also in the 1830 White County, TN Census, as Richard Jetson, at 60-70.

Fourteen names above Allen Dunn was George Credwele, who was 50-60-years-old. He was in White County, at 40-50 and between Thomas Cardwell and William Raney, in 1830. In 1850, he was in District 7 of White County, at 60, and born in NC. He may have been the George Cardwell who married Avis Bishop in Adair County, KY in 1808. His daughter, Ellen Ann, married Asher Lafever. He was on the 1825 White County, TN, tax list along with Thomas Cardwell. Peren and Thomas Cardwell were on the 1810 census in Adair County, KY. Peren is thought to be George's father.

Fifteen names below Allen Dunn was Henry Lyda, who was 60-70-years-old. He was 50-60 in the 1830 White County census. In 1823, he bought land in White County. In 1820, he was in White County, TN at 26-45.

Fifteen names above Allen Dunn was William Dunnagin, who was 30-40-years-old.

Sixteen names above Allen Dunn was Henry Collier, who was 60-70-years-old. He was on the 1833 White County tax list near the Elmores and Raneys. He was in the 6th District of White County in 1850, at 50 and born in NC. Daniel Martin, 80 and born in SC, was in the household. Henry's son, Joseph, 23, was born in AL. George was 20 and born in Iowa. George was listed as a potter. The rest of the household younger than George were listed as born in Iowa. John K. Sailers, 21 and a potter, was living with them. Next door was John A. Mitchell, a potter from Iowa as well and 52.
